Why use a pure black screen?
Often the best thing a screen can show is nothing. A pure black screen means no flashing video, no thumbnails, no glare, just a dark, quiet display you can leave running while you focus, rest your eyes, or listen to something. It also cuts reflected light in a dark room and hides a second monitor while you are on a call.
Play music without the video
This is the one I reach for most. Start a song, a podcast, or an audiobook, then let it play against a pure black screen instead of an autoplaying video that keeps stealing your attention. The audio carries on in the other tab or app while the screen shows nothing, so it stays about the listening. It is the calm option for background music at your desk, a bedtime playlist, or anything you would rather hear than watch.
Check for backlight bleed and screen uniformity
In a dark room, set the screen to pure black and study the edges and corners. Faint glowing patches are backlight bleed or IPS glow, common on LCD panels. Switch to pure white or grey instead and you will pick out uniformity problems, dust, or smudges across the whole display.
Why doesn’t it open full screen on its own?
Almost every modern browser only lets a page go full screen in response to something you do, like a tap or a click, and never on its own. It is a built-in privacy and security rule, not something this site can switch off, so a page can’t jump straight to full screen the moment it loads. The good news is that it only ever costs you one click: as long as you do not want to change any settings, you pick your color or clock and it fills the screen right away.

Press Esc or double-click anywhere. On a phone or tablet, double-tap or long-press the screen.

Pure Background is free and needs no account, sign-up, or registration. It sets no cookies and runs no advertising or third-party tracking. The only thing it saves is your own settings: your custom color, and on the clock pages the format, color, size, brightness, and drift options. Those live in your browser’s localStorage so the tool can remember how you like it next time. They never leave your browser, they are never sent to us or shared with anyone, and you can wipe them any time by clearing your browser’s site data.
